2005 Motorcycle trip to California

My friend Norm Pawchuk broke down and was getting married.. Riding to the wedding on my bike from Denver to San Diego seemed to make sense at the time...

Norm and I used to shoot together in San Diego when I was living there in 1996 - 97. We've been on several scuba diving trips together and since I moved to Colorado it's been more than a few years since we got together.

So I got me a pack for the bike, some Italian shoes and 'wrapped' my suit very carefully into my limited luggage space..

Pit stop in Durango, Colorado, May 10th

I sat my goals easy and rode from Boulder to Durango on the first day. Since I was going over the mountains on 287 I made a short stop over at my friend Rick's cabin in Pine Junction. He told me there was a snow storm coming in that might compromise my trip. There was only one thing to do - tuck down behind the windshield and cross Colorado as fast as I could. It was freezing over the mountains and I got rained on three times. By the time I made it into Durango I was pretty happy to jump in the hot tub..

Second pit stop at Brian's house in Tempe, Arizona, May 11th - 12th

In the evening the next day, I made it into Tempe, Arizona and after 8 hours of sitting on the bike, yoga sounded like a good idea. Timing was perfect; Brian and his friends were going to a concert so we partied it up that night. The next day I chilled out at Brian's and met up with Allan for some Kung Fu sparring in the evening.

Woke up late the next day, oh shit.. Norm's rehearsal dinner starts at 4pm... I've gotta go... Left Brian's at 11:40am. Late, but figured I could make it somehow.. On this trip, no patrol officers and straight easy roads. Had the bike up to 160mph. Bike is good for more, but with my suit and shoes it's slowing me down.

Final Destination - Rehearsal dinner in El Cajon, California, May 13th

Arrived in El Cajon, four hours and 34 minutes later...With a radar detector I could have made even better time, thus Tempe to El Cajon has a potential of 4 hours max driving time.

Party time... Norm's rehearsal dinner at Bob's house... No pictures and that's probably a good thing.

Pacific Beach Block Party, May 14th

Woke up early at Bob's house, Shelley's dad, but I didn't feel like getting up. After coffee and hanging out with Norm's brother Ken, Bob and Ruthie, it turned out that I would be able to help Bob set up the projector using my laptop - for the wedding video.

Rode my bike over to Therese and Rick's house in Clairemont. I met up with them and we chatted a little bit before we headed out for the Pacific Beach block party.

Norm & Shelley's Wedding Day, May 15th

Next day I rode my bike out to Bob's house where I found he had put the wrong video on the DVD.. Cranked out a new one and we were off to Harbor Island for the ceremony. It was an awesome ceremony on the grass, by the ocean with sailboats floating by... I ended up being the video photographer for most of the ceremony and yes... Norm and Shelley got married! Congratulations. Reception was held at The Thursday Club were we all got silly on the dance floor. Some of it, I believe is on tape. Karoke into the night..

Norway's Independence Day Celebration, May 17th!

After work, we met up at Marianne's house, changed to party clothes and drove over to Mister A's for 17th of May celebration dinner in downtown San Diego. Met Åshild, her boyfriend Perry, Gunnar and his girlfriend Maria, Stig and his girlfriend, and Rick and Therese.

And from here on, it's all about riding...

San Diego to Oxnard, May 18th

Started heading up the coast just after 3pm. Gassed up in San Clemente. Later on, stopped in Santa Monica on Sunset Boulevard. Bought a disposable camera and some food.

Rode into the sunset until I finally camped out in a motel in Oxnard. Was getting kind of cold.

Santa Monica by night...

Oxnard, Lompoc, and Pismo Beach, May 19th

Woke up crazy early in my motel room in Oxnard, CA. Contemplated for a short while to sleep in a little longer and made the best decision of my life; get up and get going..
On the road by 6:30am.

Quiet ride up the interstate 5 until I got off on route 1 through Lompoc. Slower, but a really nice detour. Followed Hwy 1 all the way up to Pismo Beach.

There is a 30-minute stretch along highway one that is absolutely worth the trip. And it's like this all the way...

Hearst Castle, May 19th

Stopped by Hearst Castle by San Simeon, just after Cambria. Cambria, btw being another beautiful place. The Hearst Castle shortest sightseeing tour takes almost two hours. When you're on a serious motorcycle trip it's hard to stop and smell the flowers some times... I skipped it.

A guy on a roadtrip from Arizona helped me finally get me in one of the shots, so it's not just the bike I get to memorize..

Monterey & Carmel, May 19th

After that, it was one of my best rides up to Monterey. Actually stopped in Carmel Valley to gas up. It was starting to get cloudy at that point. Put some more clothes on and it was miserable until I made it to Santa Cruz. Turned out it was bike-week, May 17th - 22nd, but didn't see any bikes at all...

Leaving the coast and heading inland, May 19th

Took route 9 up through Saratoga and over to Los Gatos. Very slow, but an incredible curvy road. It does get pretty high up there and towards the summit I met with some fog and light drizzle. That part sucked, but on a sunny day it would be amazing.

Took I-680 over to Fremont where I gassed up. Continued north until I picked up I-580. Stopped in Tracy where I asked a very helpful girl at the motel about close I could make it to Yosemite and still find a room. Unfortunately she was totally wrong, told me it was 3 hours to Yosemite. Well, it's only 1.5 hours. I ended up riding over to Manteca where I spent the night.

Started driving towards Yosemite on route 120, but it was closed so came up with alternative plan to ride through Lake Tahoe. Took route 99 north and got off on 88 to Tahoe. Beautiful scenery, in particularly by Jackson. Wanted to stop and snap some shots, but too eager to go-go-go. Definitely an incredible place to live, possibly get some larger acerages. Could have followed 88 all the way to Tahoe, but decided to shoot up north on 49 to Placerville. Now, THAT was a good choice.

It's probably much slower, but what a ride! Perfect riding country.

Lake Tahoe, May 20th

Another beautiful ride up to Tahoe, but as I got up in the mountain the fog set in with a light drizzle. Got really cold and people were driving slow. I tightened up and skipped stopping to put more clothes on. Figured it would be good for my character to suffer through it. After all, it's just cold, but the body gets chilled, very chilled.

Leaving Tahoe, May 20th

Put some more clothes on and rode over the mountain to Carson City. Like riding giant slalom coming down the mountain. Passed a Harley who tried to catch up to me. Nice leaning over and nice hi-speed down-the-mountain ride @ 90mph.

Gassed up on Fallon, Nevada. 43 miles per gallon - new record.

Arriving in Ely, Nevada on May 20th

Made it to Ely, Nevada in one hour and fortyfive minutes.
Ran the bike at 120mph for long stretches and brought it up to 162mph at max. Some serious winds out here so was afraid to go much faster. Noticing a BIG power drop, in particular in lower spectrum. Oh, how I miss California. The bike is so much more responsive.

This picture was taken after sitting on the bike for 9 hours straight... only making quick stops for gas. Yeah, I was tired.

Home in Colorado on May 20th

Back home in Colorado... Crossing Vail Pass @ 10,603 feet above sea level.
