2007 Camp Guernsey Invitational Multi-Gun

The Colorado Multi Gun guys knows how to have fun. If in doubt, read further.. Last year I went to the ITRC match in Gillette, Wyoming and since it got cancelled this year, the Camp Guernsey Invitational seemed like a very good replacement drug for my newly acquired precision rifle & multigun addiction. I need to do at least one of these types of matches every year from now on..

Alan Samuel, Eric Miller and Zak Smith of the Colorado Multi Gun organization and everybody else who helped put on an incredible match that challenged your equipment, shooting skills, physical fitness and ability to deal with whatever they would throw at us. We shot 7 stages over 3 days starting with a night shoot. 40 pop-up targets with green lightsticks taped to them were to be engaged from 50 to 300 meters. With targets placed in natural terrain you would have to account for elevation, wind and difficulty seeing your crosshairs. Top score posted was 32 out of 40 by Chuck Ward. No night vision gear allowed and since nobody had shot at night at lit targets before it required a lot of mental focus and attention on anyone who wanted to have any chance of finding and hitting their targets. Super idea.

Early morning Saturday we continued with "Sniper One", the long range rifle and carbine event. Three targets at 465yds, 615yds and 500yds had to be engaged from the top of a hill - targets located on the other side of the valley. Two shots maximum allowed for the rifle targets, a 5 second penalty applied for not hitting the target on the first shot and a 15 additional seconds added if you missed your second. After engaging these, pick up both your rifle and carbine, run down the mountain trail about 50 yds to the second shooting position. Engage the same targets, now at 450yds, 605 yds and 480 yds. After re-engaging them, pick up your carbine and shoot 14 steel targets, all located within a few hundred yards. Leave your rifle at the second position and move to your third and final position to re-engage the same 14 steel targets with your carbine. Zak Smith dominated this stage with a total time of 217.92 seconds.

"Slant Sniper", stage 3, involved 5 targets at 470yds, 600yds, 550yds, 480yds and 690yds to be engaged from a mountain top. All targets located at something like a 15 degree angle at the bottom of the mountain. With shifting wind conditions and the 'slant' the far away targets were not easy to hit. After engaging the rifle targets, the rifle was abandoned, the carbine slung and the pistol drawn to engage 5 paper targets and 4 steel targets with your pistol. Then re-holster the pistol and engage 7 carbine targets at 200 - 300 yards away. We had varying luck with the rifle targets, but Alan Samuel impressed us all with a one-for-one hit with his 300 Win Mag. All in our squad struggled with the carbine targets. The position, wind and target size made them more difficult than we expected. I won this stage.

After lunch we continued on "Gully", a 13 IPSC paper and 17 steel target all-pistol course. In all honesty, I should have won this stage, but not totally drilled on my 'tactical' pistol setup I made sure to fuck this one up pretty good. Eddie Rhodes took home the victory with a total time of 61.06.

Final stage for Saturday was "Mk19", a super-cool carbine and rifle combination stage. Eric Miller showed us the way in 60.77 seconds and most of the stage is on the potpourri video.. check it out.

I fell asleep early Saturday and slept in as long as I could on Sunday, extremely tired from a 90+ degree long day in Wyoming. Thanks to Alan's planning we had two very non-physical stages on Sunday morning. Starting off with "Convoy" which involved riding in the back of Alan's Humvee, engaging a maximum of 23 reactive targets in 20 mph. Most targets were about 70yds away, but some way out there and basically impossible to hit. Top score... 7 out of 23 which might indicate the difficulty level. Trapr Swonson and John Sternberg tied for first on this one. First part of the course was fairly even, but half-way through the road got bumpy. Several people zeroed this stage and 1 or 2 hits was more common than not.

Wrapping up the match, we shot "CPQC" which meant shooting 40 popup targets standing with carbine, 40 popup targets with carbine/pistol and 40 popup targets with pistol. Not exactly a hard course, but it turned into a somewhat lottery since the sensors registered something like 3 out of 4 carbine hits and 7 out of 8 pistol hits. It seemed to register the same for everyone, but bigger calibers seemed to set them off better. Oh well, all in all we had blast and in the end I surprisingly took home a brand new AR-15 for finishing third in this match. I didn't expect a prize table at all so this was a nice finish to an incredibly creative and fun-beyond-words match. Thank you!

3 Minute Potpourri Video from the Match.
Starring: Eric Miller, Adam Casanova, Alan Samuel, James Casanova, Shawn Nealon and Henning Wallgren.
File size: 17 Mb.
File type: Windows Media File (WMV)

Oh, and I almost forgot my own product pitch... Adam, James and myself all had Thor 260's modified to 308's on our long range rifles and Thor 223's on the AR-15's... I'm going to write an article about it soon, in the mean time, they're available in the shop.

James Casanova engaging the long range
targets on "Sniper One"

Camp Guernsey, Wyoming became our home for
the weekend. I'll be back...

Carbine targets on "Sniper One",
14 of them total, though only 10 or 11 in this picture.
(Can you find them...?)
I used a simple Leupold 2-7 on the carbine and it
turned out to be a pretty good setup,
though probably not ultra trick.

Eric Miller RO'ing Adam Casanova engaging
the three easy long-range rifle targets
on "Mk19". 177yds, 250 yds and 201 yds.
Both Adam and I shot our AR-10 .308s and did
pretty good considering we didn't show up with
any trick bolt rifles / calibers.

Alan's Humvee which we all got to enjoy,
riding in the back while shooting our carbines
in 20 mph...

Don't you want to show up next year?

Our squad taking a break by the "Gully"
pistol course. The army took very good care of us.
Without their support none of this would
have been possible.

About 40 shooters showed up total, which
meant we all had to help out tearing down after
the match. It's a very good crowd to hang with.

Running and Gunning...
Up and Down mountains...
In Natural Terrain...

That's right... this is where you'll find it..

Just bring guns...

"Slant Sniper". The 5 rifle targets are located at the
end of the road. The road leading to the left
is about 470yds away and the farthest target
about 690yds.

Alan nailed them all on the first shot with his
300 Win Mag. James hit his 690yd on the first shot.
We're very proud of them ;-)

Shawn Nealon of Cavalry Arms
brought full-auto guns and a full outfit.

He also made sure all paper targets was
engaged with headshots.. No BS.

Lots of gear to carry, but it's worth it.
And you don't have to have the latest and
greatest to have fun..

Adam took home a new upper from Patriot Arms
as his 6th finish prize!
