2008 New Zealand National IPSC Championships

New Zealand is an incredible country. My girlfriend Emma, my buddy Eddie Rundgren from Norway and I made a big excursion out of the NZ Nationals. We drove from Colorado to Phoenix to Los Angeles, flew out to Auckland where we met up with my friend Peter Vujcich. We drove with Peter from Auckland to Lake Rotorua where the match was held, shot the match, rented a car and ventured for weeks through the most beautiful, lush landscape in the world. A huge thanks to Peter for taking care of us from we landed until we left. Matt Webber and Steven Welsh who organized and shot with us were a riot to hang out with. Also got to meet Phil Dunlop who I've emailed with and some of you US shooters know from the past. Phil's been around and both Brian (Enos) and my friend Even Skaarer told me to meet up with him. "He's a good guy" both of them told me and they were spot on. I also got to meet Bruce Cole and Bernie Sorenson who I've emailed with over the past two years. And to everyone else who made our trip incredible; thank you. We'll be back.

It was a true pleasure shooting in New Zealand. Eddie and I was squaded on the Limited squad
and got to shoot with guys that became good friends.

Peter Vujcich going for his gun

The planning of this trip started in April 2008 after
I'd mailed some parts to Peter. It made it there
in 6 days, upon which New Zealand suddenly
seemed a lot closer.. two weeks later
I had my plane ticket ;-)

Matt Webber with both feet in the air

Matt is New Zealand's RD and the man that makes
it happen. If you decide to go to an amazing country
and shoot with good people that knows how to
have fun, email Matt and get your gun paperwork
started a few months before the match!

I had to take this priceless picture of Kevin..

"This is what happens when you don't put enough
powder in your ammo... there's two bullets in there..."

The 18 stages were challenging and WORLD CLASS!
Here's one of the tricky shooting positions
Steven Welsh cooked up for us. He designed 17
out of 18 and he did an absolutely impressive job!
Both me and Eddie were really impressed with
the quality of the stages, way beyond our
expectations. A lot of matches have something
to learn from these guys.

Matt Webber on the "Canoe" stage. It was very
wobbly, plus two swingers and little steel. Yeah, I f@#$k'ed that one up pretty good..

Eddie had the fastest time on this stage; 3.77 seconds.

I won Standard Division and Eddie won C Open.

Peter ready to go prone

Since I don't like to go prone, this worked out..

..and a lazy flip over to the left side

Phil Dunlop reloading on a cool stage

No words.. this is for you buddy.
It was Tor's first IPSC competition.

Matt's undisputable dedication to IPSC.

Videos...

I can't remember the stage number or names
so I've given them my own nicknames..

Can you make it?
This was a very original stage where you would
start a bobbing target and had to run back and
around a wall to get the bobber. The timing was such
that you could shoot a couple of targets [before]
the bobber. I tried something gutsy, didn't work out
because of a heavy lean, but it didn't cost me either
because I had a different plan than everyone else.
Taking the phone call

On a bike ride
My absolute best stage in the match and
probably all I can really be proud of in this match.
Shot this in 7 seconds something. Connected
with everything and just fun to walk off the stage.
7 seconds of glory

The Dark Room..
Very cool stage where you start outside and run
into a dark room. You had to get used to the dim
light after being out in the sun. I had two reloading
plans in my head and ended up reloading in the
wrong place, causing me to swear in Norwegian..
Henning in a dark place

Building Run
A very big stage with lots of rooms and fun, fun, fun.
Unfortunately we accidentally taped over my run
but I promise I did really good. Promise ;-)

The Jungle Run
This crazy, cool jungle run was balls to the walls.
I went all out, but experimented with short kleeted
running shoes. The sand was too slippery and I
almost fell. I got 4 shots off without seeing my
sights while trying to regain my balance.
I had 4 charlies on the stage, plus 3 D's and one
Miss on the two targets. You can't really see that
I was about to fall, but Iit was absolute
havoc inside my skull....
tripping and stumbling

Low Ports Again
Pretty cool little stage. The hit factor was low so
time wasn't as important. Well, I didn't heed my
own warning and felt like blastin'. And came up with
a way to avoid having to go prone.
I hate to go prone

A suitcase full of money
I wish. but a neat little stage that forced you to
shoot strong hand only. And targets were
definitely tough enough.
Henning and a briefcase

Why are all ports made for short people?
It's unbalanced that all ports are made for people
under 5' ;-) And to a point where I wanna prove that
it doesn't matter that I'm 6'3". So I posted the fastest
time in all division on this stage, by two seconds.
Next year let's have a stage you'll have to be at
least 6'2" to see any targets at all. Ha.
I'm too tall

Two fast disappearing targets
This had an interesting target with two targets
falling to the ground after hitting the activator. You
couldn't hold back, but not shoot too fast either to
time it just right. Wasn't easy in any way, but not
too hard if you kept your head cold.
Henning sucked at steel

Hold on to your pole
If you liked this stage you must be a self loather.
It's cool, but who wants to try to shoot a gun while
trying not to fall and kill yourself? Turned out to be
fun and challenging, but also a nail biter.
No nails left to bite

Triple Flipper
No room for safe shooting on this stage. After
activating the steel you'd shoot a wait target
and then three flip targets in a very quick
succession. "Safe" which normally would be to
shoot the third flip target on the second showing
factored the same as shooting all three and having
a miss. So.. math showed, go for it.
I went for it

Canoe trip from hell
First of all, this canoe wasn't stable at all and
trying to shoot while your ground is moving can
have all sorts of outcomes.. Add a couple of
swingers to the equation and I'd rather be
drinking beer than doing this again.
Henning wishing it was over

Flip that table over will ya?
They definitely put enough little steel in this match
to sucker me in. Stage was very good and gave
you enough distraction to test your coolness.
darn steel

Hey, let's just shoot a bunch of steel?
Yeah.. someone must think that steel is a blast.
It's embarrassing to show this one, and it's too bad
Eddie's camera caught it on tape. Why couldn't
we have taped over this one instead?
darn steel II

I'm ready to go to sleep
Very cool stage and I'd love to shoot it again.
You can tell from the vid I'm about to reload in the
middle of the stage and I should have. A small part
of my brain tried to tell me that I would run out of
bullets and the bigger and less smart part said
"nah.. you'll be fine...". That part is fired.
Too bad I'm such a dumbass

Digging a hole
for myself? That darn steel again requires more
aiming than I've got time for. Got places to go
and big open targets to shoot. Who's got time for
little steel plates?
No patience for steel

Another flip-flop
Typical stage you might see at the World Shoot
or a major international match. Provides neat
test of quick shooting skills. Easy to shoot safe,
but hard to get the timing just right. Loved the
stage.
