2008 Texas State Limited Championships

I keep coming back to Breckenridge, Texas and the Texas State Limited Championships year after year. If you like shooting iron sights and having a great time shooting good stages, this is the match for you. Jimmy and Artie Mitchell put on a great match every year and it always draws a crowd. This year, my buddy Steinar Haugli from Norway, my girlfriend Emma and I drove with the 13 hours from Colorado to Texas. We arrived at 1:30am and it was scary driving Texas roads at night. We dodged (not kidding) 7 deer, 2 foxes, anS owl and a cow !

The Limited Man of the Year, Travis Tomasie, won both the USPSA Limited Nationals and
the IPSC World Championships in Standard Divsion in the same year. It doesn't get any better than that.

Steinar also wore the Wallgrens shirt, of course..

Travis and I talking mental game
There's a huge amounts of internal pressure
created by the simple desire to win which causes
the opposite fear of losing.

It is a great social event as well as a good
match. There's always a BBQ and beer while
waiting for the awards ceremony.

Here are a couple of stages that Travis, myself and Steinar shot. You'll see some differences in
tactics here and there.

Stage 1:
We actually shot this stage on the second day as our first stage. The sun was coming up right in front of us and it made it difficult to see the sights. At the time I was shooting regular black sights, Travis doing the same. My sight measured 0.085" x 0.150". You probably can't tell from the video, but the sun made it feel like a "lot" of time was wasted waiting on the sights on the six shots. Today I'm shooting a 0.090" x 0.165" with a 0.040" yellow fiber. It has definitely helped me improve my speed and I'm looking forward to the 2009 match with my new iFiber. For an article on the iFiber, see the iFiber Article.

Stage 2:
Here's an example of where we picked two orders of shooting the last windows / positions. Steinar and Traivs picked one way and I went with what I considered to be the most efficient. It's always hard to compare, because there are so many small aspects to a stage. For instance, I had a few pickups up steel that cost me extra time. I still clocked the fastest time which I don't think I would have done had I shot the other way.

Stage 3:
This was our final stage and it provided a very interesting challenge. The stage required a minimum of 22 rounds and guess what... we can both get 21 + 1 in our guns since we're both using Tanfoglio magazine bodies. Travis uses Tanfoglio magbodies in his Caspian so we are on an even playing field. It's a very quick stage, but with a popper and a plate at the final shooting position. I did the math and it showed that you'd end up with a very similar hit factor if you had a miss with no reload or if you reloaded and hit everything. The big challenge was.. can you sustain the pressure and hit the plate with your last round? Knowing that if you miss it won't be worth to reload.

Stage 4:
Just a straight forward running and gunning. Nothing to it, except deciding to play it safe by reloading or not. But all targets were easy to not reloading would be an advantage.

Stage 5:
The only speed shoot in the match. Poppers, plates and swingers. Check out my friend Steinar on this one.

Stage 6:
Pretty cool field course. Had a few challenges. The first, 3 targets attached on a swing. Easy to pull shots out or into the D zone. Second major challenge was a similar swing of 3 targets, but swinging behind steel hard cover. This could become a serious time drain. I didn't have a specific plan, but shot what I saw and accepted one bad hit instead of waiting on the second swing. Of course I wish I could have gotten that one hit on the target, but if I had mentally shot different I probably would have had a very different time. My time was 2.5 - 3.5 seconds quicker than the "group" so taking a miss in this situation with a better time turned out "acceptable".

Stage 7:
The first three shooting positions was straight forward, but the last position had two swingers
where you could save quite a bit if your timing connected.

Stage 8:
A very nice little field course. This was right after lunch and it was getting hot so nobody remembered to film it.

Stage 9:
Strong handed stage carrying a suit case. Straight forward, but tight room for reloading. Check out my friend Steinar on this stage.

Stage 10:
Shooting on steroids. Not my favorite stage because of the excessive shooting in a very small area. All about cranking out the rounds and getting your reload on. Which could be difficult because you were crouched.

Stage 11:
A house clearing that we didn't catch on film.

Stage 12:
The traditional "standard" stage. Not on film.
